Asheville Quilt Show

We drove to Asheville this past Saturday to see the annual Asheville Quilt Show. My first time at this show and I was impressed by the number of quilts as well as the venue!

While hard to do, I do have a few favorites from the show:

Made by my dear friend, Ania Reich, this won 1st in the Special Technique division. Her statement:

I love the color in this!

Again, the color drew me in. This one used silks along with cotton, gorgeous.

This quilt was so striking, not another remotely similar. In both color and fabric choices, it was amazing.

This is a great example of a traditional block with a modern fabric where the quilt lets the textile do all the work!

In the modern category, Emily Coffey won with this:

Nope, I am not going. 

But one of my quilts is on its way!

One of my quilts was accepted in competition and I shipped it today.

I hope it has fun in Austin!

September and October ha.ve been a whirlwind of activity. My job has (thankfully) become busier, resulting in a busy travel schedule.

And I have quilts hanging in my first solo show!

My show, "Fabric Explorations" is hanging in the Apple Gallery in Danbury, NC through October. The opening reception was September 28 and was a lot of fun. Here is the show:

 The gallery began its life as a bank, yes, that is the safe behind my quilt "Phases!

In addition, I was invited to hang quilts at a local blue grass festival.

 

This is the old grist mill where the festival was held, Jessup Mill.

 My quilts were displayed throughout the mill and served as backdrops for the stage.

The quilts looked great in this setting!

I also got my gang together for a shot at my reception.

Mid-week peek!

Lucky me! When I dashed into the City Quilter yesterday, not only was I amazed at their newly expanded space, I was delighted by their exhibit of art quilts by Carol Taylor! The show is:

“Explosions of Color” at the ArtQuilt Gallery, NYC

The show opened on Sept 8, 2011 exhibiting 37 of her quilts on display.

It will run until October 29, 2011. The gallery is located at 133 West. 25th St. NY, NY.

AWESOME!!!!! More pix to come! I can not wait to get home to SEW!!!!!

So, I was approached in May about exhibiting my quilts in a local venue.

Said, YES! Because I adore sharing my love of quilts. Shainghai'ed my mom and 2 friends into letting me show theirs as well. (Thanks Kim and Ellen!)

Mom helped me hang the quilts on Monday. We were interviewed on local radio Wednesday morning and have a photo shoot/magazine interview on Friday.

Saturday is the Apple Fest at Historic Bethabara Park in Winston-Salem.

See where this is going?

Yup, the quilts are hanging in the visitors' center. And on Saturday, I am giving 2 short talks about modern quilting methods. I will be there all day as well (10:30 to 4:30) to answer questions and talk to visitors about quilts.

This is not yet complete, but I am making good progress on it.

And now, my announcement.

I am exhibiting at Historic Bethabara Park, NC. My quilts will be on display from September 17, which coincides with their yearly Apple Festival, through September 28. In addition, I will be giving 2 talks on the 17th about modern methods of quilting. I am in the process of developing my presentation to include photos of a variety of quilts. More about the Apple Festival here.

I am both excited and nervous. Not about the quilts, I am pulling in some of my mother's and some of 2 other great quilters and good friends. I know the quilts will be phenomenal. I just want to be entertaining in my presentation. If you have any ideas on what I can include to keep it fun and informative, please share. And if you are in Winston-Salem, NC on Sept 17, stop by Historic Bethabara Park, I will be in the Visitors Center.

Heart of the Triad Quilt show

My Mom and I attended the Heart of the Triad Quilt show on Saturday, May 14. This guild KNOWS how to put on a show!  Only guild members could enter quilts, but there were so many beautiful, and varied quilts to enjoy. There were also several vendors and yes, we bought fabric!

I am sharing some closeups that I took, mostly as quilting inspiration.

 I love the combination of grid work and tiny stipple texture. Just works with the fabric and applique!

 I kept going back to this quilt. That appliqued dogwood blossom is BEAUTIFUL!

 This wall quilt was made from scraps of the quilt maker's father's work clothes and the fabrics from the lawn chairs he would sit on at the end of the day. I adore the denim pocket!

 The quilting just set the pinwheels off perfectly!

This was the quilt maker's FIRST whole cloth quilt. Simply stunning.

So much inspiration in one place. 

I am already looking forward to their show next year!

Saturday at a Quilt Show!

(squeal of delight) I spent this gorgeous Saturday afternoon in Statesville, NC at the Quilting and Needle Art Extravaganza. And did I have fun! I went with my Mom, our friend Kim and her lovely daughter, Casey. Four chicks out for a day filled with laughter, beautiful colors, inspiring patterns and delightful vendors. 

This is the 3rd year of the show and it seems to have settled into the Civic Center nicely. It started as a way to get a lot of the local brick-and-mortar quilt shops together under one roof to stimulate business in this rural area.

Judging by the crowd as well as the the lines at the registers, we quilters were doing our part to stimulate this little bit of the economy!

For me, it was a great way to add to my stash as well as fill in some specific projects. I bought this group for a specific baby quilt:

And these lovely batiks just had to come home with me.

It was a perfect day!

What a weird week! Dad rushed back to ER Monday, decompressing and trying to regain my bearings Tuesday, first of a new lunch-time yoga class Wednesday, normal Thursday and Friday. Taught Free-motion yesterday (Saturday) at my favorite, home-base quilt shop Sewingly Yours. Of course it was fun! Then I stayed with Dad (doing MUCH better) so Mom could go out for some primping (hair and nails). Really did her good! I wish we could get this house sold and move closer! Mom came back glowing! Then dear extended family showed up for a visit (Carol, Tracy, Alex, Julia and Luke - So cute!!!!). All-in-all a nice Saturday. Hubby and son attended at Bluegrass Music festival in hubby's county of employment, so I missed them, but they had fun being together.

Then I got home, and checked the mail.

And I got a Big White Envelope from the American Quilter's Society.

This one's been juried into the AQS Knoxville Show!!!!! YIPPEE!!!
